The Nexom Solution:
The centrepiece of the Nexom solution is the infini-D™ Zero-Downtime Cloth Disk Filter, a revolutionary improvement on the tried-and-true pile cloth disk filter.
Why a disk filter? Disk filters have a small footprint and can be installed into purpose-built or existing steel or concrete tanks.
Why a pile cloth disk filter? Pile cloth disk filters offer high effluent quality from easy-to-maintain disks. No fixed pore-sizes means the risk of fouling is reduced, and the cloth enables an outside-in flow that permits low-backwash vacuum-based cleaning.
Why the infini-D™ Zero-Downtime Cloth Disk Filter? Our infini-D system includes a patented individual effluent port on each disk, enabling disk effluent to be isolated and each disk to be separately inspected, maintained and/or replaced, all without dewatering and while the rest of the disks remain in operation and the entire system remaining online. This built-in redundancy minimizes downtime and the need for backup filtration systems.
How it WORKS
infini-D™ doesn't stop filtering,
even during routine maintenance
Influent enters the infini-D™ Filter tank and passes through the cloth filter media that removes suspended solids. Individual cartridge’s filtered flow is visible through discharge ports. This design allows operators to monitor each cartridge’s operation and quickly isolate a disk’s performance.
The disk filter panels do not rotate: the panels are stationary and the vacuum head rotates around the disk during the backwash cycle. In the event a filter cloth needs replacing, each disk is easily removable without taking the entire filter off-line.
Also, by fixing filter disks in place, infini-D™ Filters eliminate rotating seals, thereby preventing contamination of your effluent in the event of a seal failure.
Building a better backwash
Solids accumulate on the cloth media during filtration, restrict liquid flow through it, and cause the level in the tank to rise. The backwash cycle begins when the level reaches a predetermined point.
The vacuum head rotates across the disk’s face. Only the infini-D™ Filter rotates the vacuum head in alternating directions, more effectively cleaning the cloth’s pile.
- The non-contact vacuum head extends filter cloth life by avoiding excessive cloth wear.
- The tapered vacuum head enables even cleaning of the disk surface.
- The octagonal disk design reduces dead corners.
Backwash does not disrupt filtration since only 5% of the panel surface is cleaned at once. Turbidity does not change during backwashing.
Disks are removable without dewatering
Each infini-D™ Filter disk has its own effluent discharge pipe to allow the operator to monitor effluent quality produced by individual cartridges. Cartridges can be removed, inspected and replaced without stopping filtration, and all from outside the tank.
Each unit consists of one to six disks, a vacuum pump assembly and the gear drive, axle and sprocket.
Without dewatering, operators can remove the filter’s mechanical equipment and structure from the tank by closing the disk’s valve or capping the discharge port outside the tank, disconnecting the discharge port, and lifting out the cartridge. They can inspect and replace the pile cloth as needed, then reinstall the cartridge. As each disk has its own discharge port, the filter continues to operate even with filter panels removed.
What it delivers
High effluent quality with built-in redundancy
The infini-D™ Zero-Downtime Cloth Disk Filter is the signature component in the infini-D™ Phosphorus Removal System that is designed to meet low Phosphorus limits.
A key part of the process that is often overlooked is the mixing that optimizes flocculation, particularly in cold water. The infini-D™ System integrates into its compact package a rapid-mix zone, for completely mixing the dosed ferric or alum into the wastewater, ahead of a slow-mix tank where floc can form.
Nexom extensively tests at both 18°C and 0.5°C to compare the Al3+:TP mole ratio relative to the final TP concentration (in mg/L) to determine the optimal sizing of—and retention times in—rapid and slow mix tanks, maximizing TP reduction while minimizing chemical dosing.

Why cloth filter media instead of fixed-pore space media?
Pile cloth filter media is preferable in many cases to fixed-pore media because with the same solids-size filtration, it is less prone to fouling. During the vacuum backwash process, the pile cloth that typically lays flat along the surface of the media is pulled into an upright position. This motion and flexibility of the cloth fibers allows trapped solids to be pulled into the backwash; they are less likely to become lodged in the filter media and require manual disk maintenance.
WHY UTILIZE AN OUTSIDE-IN FLOW PATH?
The outside in flow path allows for vacuum cleaning of the cloth media, rather than cleaning with pressurized water. This prevents forcing of particles into the pore spaces reducing long term fouling. In addition, particles removed are drawn directly into the sludge removal piping, eliminating the need for settling of backwashed particles which improves filtration of neutrally buoyant or lighter than water particles such as algae.
